SERVICE TEXT
389 SING ON YE JOYFUL PEOPLE - verses 1 & 2
Tonight we want to sing some songs that portray that life of service not only in our worship but also in our daily lives.
The song we just sang should reflect our attitude, not only here as we sing but as we go forth. I looked up the meaning of beguile. I think the writer of the words captured well what our fixation on Christ can do for us when faced with our daily problems of this world. Notice:
Sing on, ye joyful pilgrims,
While here on earth we stay.
Let songs of home and Jesus
beguile each fleeting day;
Sing on the grand old story
of His redeeming love,
The everlasting chorus
that fills the realms above
We need to look to the happiness of others and we can best do that by our own happiness and our example. Are we really happy serving. This should also be reflected in our daily lives. Hopefully I have left for my family, my children, my wife a legacy of happines in all aspects. I seek to make my wife happy, not just because the house is happier when the wife is happy, but because that is the right thing to do.
Eccl 9:9
Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; for that is your portion in life, and in the labor which you perform under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.
The joy of happines and a home filled with happiness for my Children to know and appreciate. But not just my family, Others should see our Joy at serving God. Some wil think we are crazy, others who knows? Point is this We are Christians, God's children and it should mean something. Our not being of the world should show, in our family live, in our work life, oure social life. Who are we?
We want to first notice attitudes of joy in our worship. David said, "I was glad when they said to me, 'Let us go into the house of the Lord..'"
30 ALL THINGS PRAISE THEE - verses 1, 2, & 3
22 HE IS IN OUR MIDST - verses 1 & 2
7 SAINTS LIFT YOUR VOICES - verses 1 & 3
27 JOYFUL, JOYFUL WE ADORE THEE - verses 1, 2, 3, & 4
FIRST PRAYER
Notice in the last song we sang -- the last phrases of verse 3 and the last phrases of verse 4.
Teach us how to love each other,
Lift us to the joy divine
Ever singing, march we onward,
Victors in the midst of strife:
Joyful music leads us sun ward
in the triumph song of life.
Next we want to notice songs which reflect our attitude of teach others as we sing.
Col. 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Eph. 5:19
speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord
Isn't a basic premise of I Cor. 14 that in our speaking, praying and singing we should be edifying the others. Even the unknowledgable visitor falls down to worship God.
We want to sing some songs that encourage people to do something. What we call invitation songs often fall in this category.
343 LET HIM HAVE HIS WAY WITH THEE - verses 1, 2, & 3
557 ROOM IN GOD'S KINGDOM - verses 1 & 3
555 INTO OUR HANDS - verses 1, 2, & 3
There are also songs which teach and encourage by our telling, hopefully with joy and exuberance, what God through Christ has done for us.
545 HIS GRACE REACHES ME - verses 1 & 2
552 BECAUSE HE LIVES - verses 1 & 3
521 SINCE I HAVE BEEN REDEEMED - verses 1 & 3
31 WHAT A SAVIOR - verses 1, 2, & 3 Sing chorus only after the third verse.
LORD'S SUPPER
Hebrews 13:15-16
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. 16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
394 LOVE ONE ANOTHER - verses 1, 2, 3
65 O MASTER, LET ME WALK WITH THEE - verses 1, 2, 3, & 4
515 OH, THE THINGS WE MAY DO - verses 1, 2, & 3
A question we want to be asking by our life and example is in the title of our invitation song. The joy of serving Jesus is for all who will receive it.
