The word "consist" has the meaning of "to stand together." Some would render this phrase "In him all things stand together." This statement is part of a larger context regarding Christ, His purpose, His relationship with God, and His dominion over all creation. In this context, we see that all creation is held together according to all that Christ is and does. Creation is centered in Christ. It is in such thoughts as these that we gain an insight into the "meaning of life" or an answer to, "why we are here."
